WASHI TAPE BIRTHDAY CAKE

My little baby is turning 3! As with all 3 years old they aren’t very sentimental so I kept my mom tears of joy and sadness to myself! Instead to kick off her birthday celebrations we made a beautiful layered birthday cake topped with three lit candles made from washi tape and watercolours on a canvas.

Here’s what you’ll need.

 Supplies:

• Washi tape
• Watercolours
• White canvas
• Brushes and small container of water

Set up:

The set up is very easy. Just arrange all your supplies in an area you usually do your crafts. The good thing about watercolours is that they are relatively mess free but I would still have a rag near by just in case.

With a black pen draw the outline of a four layered cake on the canvas. This will help you and your toddler or preschooler keep the shape of the cake when you are painting and sticking the washi tape down.

Once the outline is done, first start with the washi tape. Stick it down the length of each layer of the cake leaving white canvas space where you would like the watercolours to go. I alternated washi tape and white space.

I tore off pieces of washi tape the length of the layer and handed them to my toddler and then helped her stick it on the canvas. We did this until the entire cake was done. We then added candles on top using the washi tape. Then let the painting begin!

I wasn’t really that concerned about her covering the entire canvas and neither should you. Just let your toddler or preschooler paint where she likes. The outline of the cake and washi tape provide the boundaries that she naturally followed (or not) but I really just wanted her to decorate her cake as she wanted to!

And voila! When it’s done you have a beautiful piece of art work that is wall ready!!
