‘Turkey Trouble’: A THANKSGIVING CRAFT

Introducing ‘Turkey Trouble’

When I first showed the cover of Turkey Trouble to my 3 year-old and told her the name of the book she thought it was hilarious. We then started to think of why the turkey would feel that he was in trouble, even before we cracked open this adorable book.

We read this book several times and my daughter loves to do an imitation of the turkey grumbling “Gooble Gooble” after his disguises are discovered.

So I decided to do a craft where she could “dress” up a turkey in different animal disguises, just like the book. I wanted something that could be put on and taken off as many times as she wanted, something she could play with as we read the book.

So I came up with turkey and his disguises made from toilet paper rolls and construction paper. As we read the story she was able to put each disguise on and off. It was a hit!

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:

Supplies:

• 6 toilet paper rolls
• Red, orange, pink, white, brown, black, construction paper
• Red, orange, yellow, brown Craft Feathers
• Googly Eyes
• Cotton balls
• School Glue
• Scissors
• Pencil
• Black marker

Instructions:

Step 1. Cut 4 toilet paper rolls straight down one side so that it opens in the back.

Step 2. Cut across each 4 rolls 1/3 of the way down leaving a circle at what will be the front of the costume. You will uses these as the base for Turkey’s costumes.

Horse Costume

Step 3. Cut a small oval circle out of the white construction paper for the snout. Draw two small circles for the nostrils using the black marker. Glue this to one of the cut rolls with the circle in front.

Pig Costume

Step 4. Take one Turkey costume base and trace it on pink paper. Cut it out and glue it to a cut roll.

Draw two small circles for the nostrils using the black marker on the circle front of the costume.

Cow Costume

Step 6. Take one Turkey costume base and trace it on black paper. Cut it out and glue it to a cut roll.

Cut a flatten heart shape out of the pink construction paper for the snout. Draw two small circles for the nostrils using the black marker. Glue this to the circle part of the costume.

Sheep Costume

Step 6. Take one Turkey costume base and trace it on white paper. Cut it out. Glue cotton balls all over the cut white paper. Glue it to the last cut roll.

Rooster Costume

Step 7.  Cut 1 cm or 1 inch strip from the 5th roll. Cut it straight down. Cut out 5 “fingers” out of the red construction paper. Glue it to the front 1 cm strip.

Turkey

Step 8. Glue on googly eyes to the 6th toilet paper roll. (Make sure to glue them high up so that the turkey costumes don’t cover them). Cut out the turkey beak from orange construction paper and its waddle from red construction paper. Glue them both on to toilet paper roll.  Glue on the feathers all over the turkey toilet paper roll

Playing with the Costumes

Once all your costumes are made your toddler or preschooler will be able to dress up the turkey in all 5 costumes as you read the book.

Do this by opening the back of the costume and fitting it on the toilet paper turkey like a cuff. Only the turkey’s eyes and feathers will show through.
