Create a Fall Color Sorting Sensory Bin

Grab your large sensory bin. Add a small amount of water to fill the bottom of the sensory bin. Add the frozen vegetables – beans, carrots, peas and corn. I used a frozen vegetable mix that had all these vegetables already cut up. If you don’t have that available to you use the vegetables that you have.

Next, I added different sized spoons and green, yellow and orange bowls for sorting!

Then I asked my 18 month old toddlers to scoop out the different coloured vegetables and place them into the correct bowls.

Just like with all my activities that I do with my toddlers, I demonstrated to them what I wanted them to do first as well as explaining it in words. I scooped out a carrot and said, “Oh look I have an orange carrot! Let’s put it into the orange bowl!”

They immediately got excited and wanted to start scooping themselves. They did not always sort the vegetable by colour but when they didn’t I would gently remind them that the green bean goes in the green bowl. But after a while I just let them scoop and add the vegetables to whichever bowl they wanted!

Total Hit

This was a great Autumn activity and a fun way to practice and learn colours with my little learners. It was also a fantastic sensory bin for extended play!
