How to Set Up the Colour Matching Sticky Wall

On the wall tape up sheets of coloured construction paper in the colours that you want your little one to work on.

This was the first colour and sorting activity for my 18 month old twins so I kept it super simple with just two very different colours, red and blue. For older toddlers you can add more colours. For preschoolers you can add all six major colours of the rainbow to create a really fun and engaging colour sorting sticky wall!

Next, unroll your contact paper and tape it up over the pieces of construction paper. Gather the toys that you plan to stick on the contact paper matching the coloured construction paper. I used Mega Bloks and magnetic tiles.

The magnetic tiles stuck great and my 18 month old twins had no problems sticking them up. Most of the Mega Bloks stayed up as well but if you are going to use these types of blocks choose ones that have a large flat surface area such as the single block, double and long quadruple blocks.

Place the items or toys in front of the sticky wall and invite your toddler or preschooler to sort the items by sticking them up on top of the corresponding colour.

Introducing Colours and Sorting

Learning colours can be a difficult process for your child therefore do not get discouraged if they do not grasp the concept right away. Since this was the first time my 18 month old twins have ever participated in an activity like this I helped them out a lot and I only used two colours.

I modelled what I wanted them to do and talked constantly about the colours of the blocks and tiles that they were sorting.

For older toddlers and preschoolers add more colours or all the colours of the rainbow for a fun and engaging colour sorting activity!

Total Hit

My little toddlers loved their first colour sorting activity! And the best part of this activity is that they were able to remove the blocks and tiles and start doing the activity again multiple times!

We will definitely be using this idea for many more colour sorting activities over the next few months and years where learning colours and sorting activities are key!
