Learning With Pom Poms

I am a huge fan of pom poms! They are colourful, soft and fluffy and perfect for little hands! They are also great to use in a plethora of activities from using them to learn letters, numbers, shapes and more.

In this activity, I used them to create leaves on a cardboard tube tree! I first saw this idea on Hands On As We Grow and knew that I had to create something similar. You can make colourful rainbow leaves (my kids loved this idea) or you can make it for spring and use pink Pom Poms for cherry blossoms. Alternatively, you can make it fall themed and use red, orange, brown Pom Poms or make the Pom Poms apples and use the colours red, green and yellow.

How to Make A Pom Pom Balance Tree

  1. Cut slits all along the cardboard tube the same size and width as your dosing teaspoons or plastic spoons. Cut the slits at various levels on all around of the tube.
  2. Slide the dosing teaspoons or plastic spoons into the slits.
  3. Fill a sensory bin or a bowl with Pom Poms.
  4. Invite your child to use tongs or their fingers to place the Pom Poms into the spoon part of the dosing teaspoons.

Other Ways to Play with Your Pom Pom Tree

Once you have made your pom pom tree, don’t toss it! You can use it again with other items to extend the learning and fun! Use items such as little dinosaurs, bears, marbles, beans or even scoop out coloured rice into the spoons.

Other Ways to Play:

  • Place dot stickers on each spoon and invite your preschooler to match the colours.
  • Write numbers on the dot stickers or directly on the spoons and invite your preschooler to count out that number of beans into each spoon.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to finally share my new crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched July 1 at on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
