HAPPY TODDLER PLAYTIME

Hide the Alphabet Toddler Activity

Hide the alphabet toddler activity is a fun and easy letter recognition activity. Play this fun game of bury the letters that your child will want to do again and again!

On a good day, I try to do about 3 activities in the morning. One for colours, one for math and one alphabet activity. It doesn’t always happen as sometimes my twins have other plans or they aren’t into the activity that day.

But I find that life at home with twins toddler goes much easier when I have our time planned out. So between 9 and 10 am my happy toddlers are elbow deep in rice, playing with dot stickers or some other creative thing I’ve come up with!

Today it was Hide the Alphabet! The first thing you’ll need to do to set up this activity is to colour some rice. Although using coloured rice is not required it does help to make this activity more enticing for little ones.

I find the best way to get my toddlers motivated about an activity is to not neglect presentation. That’s not to say that it has to be beautiful and expensive looking. Far from it! It just has to be colourful and enticing.

The good news is that as the parent, teacher or caregiver of your little toddler you will know what they will find irresistible!

How to Make Colored Rice

What You’ll Need

  • 1 Cup of White Rice
  • 1/2 tsp White Vinegar
  • Several Drops of Gel Food Coloring
  • Large Ziploc Bags
  • Parchment Paper
  • Baking Sheets or Tupperware containers

How to Make

  1. Combine the rice, white vinegar and food coloring in a Ziploc bag.
  2. Seal it carefully and mix the contents throughly.
  3. Repeat for each color.
  4. Lay a sheet of parchment paper on a baking sheet or line a Tupperware container.
  5. Spread the colored rice out on the parchment paper and allow it to dry overnight.

Troubleshooting

If you don’t have gel food coloring, regular food coloring will work fine. If you want your rice to be more vibrant add more than just a few drops of food coloring and a small amount of white vinegar. Although the instructions calls for 1 cup of rice I usually make between 6-7 cups of rice for a sensory bin.

I let my twins place the letters into each section of the muffin tin. As they did I asked them what letter it was. Then I invited them to hide the letters. As they did we said goodbye to each letter. I made sure to identify it’s sound as well as a familiar word that started with that letter.

They had a blast and even wanted to play this fun and easy game again the next day!
