What is Oobleck?

Making oobleck is one of those kitchen science experiments that is so simple to do at home that you’ll wonder why you haven’t done it before. Making oobleck is much easier than you think. It only requires two ingredients: water and corn starch. When these two ingredients are combine in the right portions this create this awesome sensory substance that just feels fantastic between your fingers.

Oobleck is neither a solid nor a liquid. It will act like either a liquid of a solid depending on the amount of pressure you apply to it. This type of liquid is know as a non-Newtonian fluid.

Apply lots of pressure by squeezing it tightly in the palm of your hand, and it will feel like a solid ball. The moment you open your hand though, it will flow out and drip down between your fingers like a liquid.

If you would like to make regular oobleck, check out this recipe here. Check out these other amazing recipes and ways to play with oobleck here.

What is Apple Pie Oobleck?

Apple Pie Oobleck is oobleck with a few extra ingredients added to make it smell and look like apple pie! The extra ingredients are also very accessible and there are a few alternatives available if you don’t have exactly everything listed.

Oobleck is also amazing for all ages since it is taste safe. This apple pie oobleck we are going to make, however is not taste safe since it uses red paint. If you want to make it taste safe, skip the red paint and use red food colouring instead.

Apple Pie Oobleck Ingredients

There are four ingredients needed to make this apple oobleck recipe — cornstarch, apple juice, apple pie spice and red paint!

To add color, use tempera paint over food coloring in order prevent any staining of hands and/or clothing.

For this apple pie oobleck you can either use a combination of spices to create the apple pie scent or you can use apple pie spice.

To mix the ingredients together I used a large bowl. Any large mixing bowl will do. The bigger the better. I recommend mixing playing in the same bowl to cut down on the mess so if you have a plastic mixing bowl that would work better especially with smaller children.

I also recommend coving your surface with a plastic table cloth or butcher or Kraft paper. You can also just put the bowl in a large storage bin, the kind that you can use to store things under your bed or what I also call a sensory bin!

If you took a look at the mess meter at the end of this post you will see that this activity has one of the highest messy factors out there. This is a messy activity. Be prepare for that but just remember two things. First, this is the kind of mess that is amazingly fun for your kids (trust me they will love this). Second, oobleck is surprisingly easy to clean up!

Combine all the ingredients together in a bowl and mix! You can start with a spoon but trust me you and your child will quickly realize this is harder than it looks. The best way to mix all the ingredients together is with your hands. So dig in and get messy! I let me kids do the mixing and they loved it!

Continue to mix the ingredients together until you have reached the right consistency. The right consistency for oobleck will feel like honey in your hands but when in the bowl is like a solid. When you push your hands through it it will give and almost tear if you were to drag your fingers through it.

You may need to add more corn starch or water as needed so have each on hand just in case. You will know that your oobleck is ready when you hold it in your hands and make a fist around it, it remains in a solid ball form but the moment you open your fist it oozes out like a liquid.
