How to Set Up Leaf Cutting Activity
Fold each piece of construction paper twice to make a square. To make leaves I first drew the shape of the different leaves on the paper with a pencil and then cut them free hand. Here is a leaf template that I used to help me draw the leaves.
Once you have cut out the leaves, draw at least dotted lines along which your little one will cut.
Draw straight lines, angled lines and curved lines all along the leaves giving your little one a variety of different pathways to cut.
Then let me 4 year old choose a pair of scissors to use and start cutting!
Model Model Model
Before starting this activity I modeled how to cut along the curved and angled lines.
I showed her how to hold the paper and move it so that she could cut properly without hurting herself. She picked up on how to do it quite quickly and finished the leaves I made and asked to do more!
