Self Portrait Activities

Activities such as self portraits are a wonderful way to talk differences as well by highlighting things that we all have in common. We are have skin, eyes and hair and they all perform the same function for all of us. But the beauty of it is that our skin, eyes and hair all come is a variety of colours, shapes and textures! You can use books and dolls as a way to feature diverse people into the activity.

Age Suitability

This activity is good for kids 3 years and up. My kids are 3.5, 3.5, and 7 year old.

Exciting Sensory Bins for Curious Kids

Did you know I wrote a book of sensory bins? Click here for more information Exciting Sensory Bin for Curious Kids. Or grab your copy at Amazon.

Engage your child in hours of play with my colorful collection of sensory bin activities that aid with memory formation, language development, problem-solving skills and more. Perfect for toddlers from eighteen months to three years old and beyond, each bin makes use of materials you already have at home and helps reignite your kids’ interest in toys long forgotten.

Boring afternoons are made exciting with awesome animal-based bins, like Salty Shark Bay or Yarn Farm. Pretend play bins like Birthday Cake Sensory Play or Bubble Tea Party encourage creativity and imagination. And your kids will have so much fun they won’t even know they’re getting smarter with STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) activities like Sink or Float Soup, Magnetic Letter Hunt or Ice Cream Scoop and Count.

Paper Plate Self Portraits

We are going to be making self portraits. Grab a hand mirror and look at ourselves in the mirror, Have children describe their hair, eyes, skin, mouth by colour, shape, texture. Brown, yellow, black, blue, green, round, pointy, straight, curly, long, short.

Isn’t amazing that we all have skin and eyes and hair and yet they can come is so many different shapes, colours and sizes!

  1. Grab the paint and mix browns, white, black and beige to make the the closest colour to your skin tone. Paint the paper plate. Set it aside to dry.

Isn’t it cool how we are all have a different shade of brown. Do you know why we have all different shades of brown? It’s because of melanin! It’s a pigment in everyone’s skin that forms the different shades of brown.

  1. Out of white construction paper cut out eyes. Use paint sticks to colour in the eye colour.
  2. Choose pom poms, buttons, yarn, straw, crepe paper, construction paper to make their hair. Let the child choose the items they want to use as hair. They don’t need to choose items that accurately reflect their features. Glue them down on the paper plate. To make curly hair, I curled strips of paper around a pencil. For preschoolers, hold the pencil for them as they curl the paper around the pencil!

Look those curls are just like yours!

Why did you choose those items?

  1. Choose pom poms, buttons, yarn, straw, pipe cleaners to make their mouth. Glue them down on the paper plate.

Look at all these beautiful shades of brown!
