This is an amazing early math and spacial awareness activity for toddlers and preschoolers!

They have to figure out how many little triangles fit into the big triangle or how many little squares will fit into the big square or how many little rectangles fit into the big rectangle. They also have to figure how to fit each smaller shape into each the larger shape.

PUZZLE5

It was a challenging and fun activity for my two year old but the sticky wall helped to keep her engaged!

Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

 Set Up

Gather your supplies. Before you introduce this activity to your toddler or preschooler, cut off a piece of contact paper. Then using either the washi tape or painter’s tape create the outlines of the larger triangle, square, diamond, and rectangle shapes by using the smaller shapes (see picture below).

For instance, for the large square, I used four smaller squares. I put them together and then outlined them using blue washi tape. For the diamond, I used four triangles. For the rectangle, I used three smaller rectangles. For the top triangle I used four and for the bottom triangle I used two smaller triangles.

The tape will go on the sticky side of the paper. Stick it up on the wall using the washi tape or painter’s tape.

This will become the outlines that your toddler or preschooler will follow.

PUZZLE

My daughter immediately started to do the easiest shapes first which were the squares.

I made sure to let her know that the shapes were to stay within the lines. I helped her figure out how to turn the shapes so that they fit. This activity is great for developing her spatial awareness which is necessary skill in early math.

The rectangles were also fairly easy for her to do. The triangles were a bit more tricky. My daughter had to figure out (with my help) how many triangles fit into each outline.

And then she had to determine how to orient them.

Trouble Shooting

The shapes stick well on the contact paper with just a little push. They wont stay up forever but will definitely stay up for the duration of the activity.
