St Patrick’s Day is a great time of year to celebrate colours. And this activity is no exception. In this fun and easy activity I use my green foam shapes in a water soup for a great pouring and scooping activity!

I love using my foam shapes in activities with my toddlers. They are great for learning activities and crafts and can be used any time of the year.

In this activity we use them in a soup along with our pretend gold coins for a fun and engaging fine motor skill activity.

How to set up the St Patrick’s Day Sensory Activity

Fill your sensory bin with water and add your green foam shapes. The foam shapes come in a big pack of every colour of the rainbow. It took me about 3 minutes to separate a bunch of green ones out the night before doing the activity while I was watching The Windsors on CNN!

Next, add gold coins (make sure they are plastic will not bleed colouring into the water) and a green or gold party necklace, if you have one. Finally, add your tools such as spoons, bowls and measuring cups.

For something different, I add our dish rack to the sensory table and stuck a few green funnels in between the wire slots, so that my twins could scoop and pour the water, shapes and coins down the funnels.

How they played

My twins immediately rolled up their sleeves and dived right in – scooping and pouring from the measuring cups and jugs into the bowls and back again. They really enjoyed filling up one container and them pouring that container into another container.

After about 20 minutes of play, I set up the dish rack over one side of the sensory table and hung the funnels up. They continued to scoop and pour into the funnels collecting the coins and green shapes.

Although I had hoped to make this into a sorting activity, my twins were not interested at all in sorting the coins or shapes. So I showed them what I wanted them to do by sorting the coins and shapes in the bowls, talking about what I was doing as they played.

As they poured the water into the funnels the coins and shapes collected there. This would be a great time to have preschoolers use a fine motor tool like tongs or jumbo tweezers to sort the coins and shapes into bowls.

What we talked about

For my 24 month old twins, I did most of the talking in this activity. I talked about shapes, colours, and what they were doing. Looking for more ideas? This St. Patrick’s sensory bin also looks like a lot of fun!
