This is a fun twist on a classic toddler activity the Pom Pom Drop. Normally to do this activity you would tape cardboard tubes to a wall and let your baby, toddler or preschooler drop pom poms down the tubes to their little hearts content.

DROP

In this activity, THEY get to create, arrange and engineer their own pom pom drop!

Problem Solving Activity

This is a wonderful problem solving activity that toddlers, preschoolers and school age children would enjoy.

DROP6

Its gets their brain thinking about all the different ways they can arrange the tubes.

DROP8

If the pom poms get stuck or don’t make it all the way down, you and your child can problem solve a way to fix it.

STEAM Activity

This is also a wonderful activity to introduce the concept of gravity to toddlers and preschoolers.

DROP10

You can show them through trial and error that in order for the pom poms to drop the tubes must be facing down. This activity is also great for showing them cause and effect.

Fine Motor Activity

DROP12

And of course pom pom drops are also a great way to develop fine motor skills. Helping to work those fine muscles in your child’s hands that are key to writing.

Introducing the Activity

For toddlers and preschoolers you will have to show them how they can stick the cardboard tubes on to the sticky wall. At first my 3 year old only wanted to play with one tube that she had stuck to the wall.

DROP1

I allowed her to play with this and then asked her if she wanted to added more. She was reluctant at first but then I showed her how much fun it would be to make a long pom pom drop.

Making the Sticky Wall

Tape the sticky paper to the wall, with the sticky side facing out using the painter’s tape. Fill a sensory bin with your pom poms and cardboard tubes. And your are done!

DROP20

Invite your child to create their own pom pom drop by showing them how to stick the tubes on the sticky paper.

DROP14

Make sure to tell them that they have to press firmly on the tubes to that they will stick but not too firmly that it bends the tubes.

DROP15

Trouble Shooting

Yes, the tubes may fall down but that is apart of the process. Building structures is never an easy process. Just like building a tower of blocks sometimes a few fall down! Try pressing down on the tubes a little to help them stay. And simply tell your child ‘Oops lets just put that back up there and lets press on it a little harder so that it will stick’. And it will!
