My happy kids are 6 years and 2.5 years old.

I will be the first to admit that I am not the best cook in my house. It’s not that I am not a good cook, it’s just that I don’t really like doing it. Or perhaps it’s that I don’t really like cleaning up afterwards!

During Thanksgiving it’s my husband that does most of the cooking. But I am trying to change my ways and I am trying to get me kids involved in this new endeavour.

If you want to get your kids cooking this Thanksgiving, this is a great way to get started. This simple recipe is fun easy enough that kids can do it themselves depending on their age or with assistance.

Perfectly Imperfect Bread

I used a recipe from Your Homebased Mom to make this turkey bread. You can also use her recipe to make a loaf of bread. Check out her site for details on how to make a loaf of bread.

This is a messy activity so be prepared for the mess and let your kids have fun. Also, depending on how old your child is you will probably have to help with some of the kneading at the end.

OK lets get started!

Supplies & Ingredients

  • 3 Cups of all purpose white flour (divided into 1 Cup batches)
  • 3 Tbsp white sugar
  • 2 1/4 Tsp instant yeast
  • 1 Cup warm water
  • 3 Tbsp olive oil or vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 Tsp salt
  • 1 Resealable plastic bag
  • Baking sheet
  • Dinner knife

Instructions for Bread in a Bag

  1. In a resealable plastic bag combine 1 Cup of flour, sugar and yeast and warm water. I used warm tap water.
  2. Remove all the air out of the bag and seal it tight.
  3. Use your hands to massage the ingredients together throughly.
  4. Let it rest for 10 minutes at room temperature. Bubbles will form.
  5. Open the bag and add in another 1 Cup of flour, oil and salt.
  6. Seal bag again and massage the ingredients together throughly.
  7. Open the bag and add the last cup of flour. Seal and squish and mix the ingredients throughly.
  8. Remove the dough from bag and place it onto a lightly floured baking sheet.
  9. Knead for 5-10 minutes or until smooth.
  10. Divide the dough into 8 small balls for the pumpkins; feathers and turkey head. Create one slightly larger ball for the turkey body. Create 2 tiny balls for the pumpkin stems.
  11. Cover with a towel and allow to rise for about 30 minutes.
  12. Create your pumpkins: Take a dinner knife and very lightly press into the pumpkin to create lines. Be sure not to press too hard that your knife cuts through but press hard enough that the lines stay.
  13. Roll the tiny balls in your hands to create the stems for the pumpkins. Stick them in the center of the pumpkins
  14. Take the slightly larger ball and make it the body of your turkey. Place one small ball on top to create the head of the turkey.
  15. Take the remaining balls and arrange them around the turkey body as feathers. Flatten and shape them into feathers. Use your knife to create lines similar to feathers.
  16. Bake in an over at 375 degrees for 13-17 minutes or until bread is golden brown.
