How to Create a Backyard Obstacle Course Kids Will Love
To create a great course you need to have a few elements:
- jumping
- hopping
- crawling
- throwing
- riding
- balancing
- sliding
- bowling
- zig zagging
- tossing
A few key supplies that we included in our course include:
- Cardboard box
- Skipping rope
- Toddler slide
- Hula hoops
- Bicycles
- Sidewalk chalk
- Bowling set
- Ball Pit Balls
- Basket
- Storage Bin
- Painter’s Tape
- Basketball net
- Balls
- Buckets
Painter’s Tape Start
I used painter’s tape to create the start of the course as well as a few of the obstacles. It worked so well on the grass that I will definitely be using it again.
Slide
Next step – slide! Oh so easy it was almost criminal! but the perfect way to start the course.
Hula Hoop Hop
I then grabbed all the hula hoops that I had – two – and created the second obstacle.
Tight Rope Walker
For the next section, I used a skipping rope to create a balance beam.
Ball Toss Challenge
The next section was a ball toss challenge. I grabbed a bunch of our ball pit balls and a storage bin. The Challenge: you have to toss one ball into the bin before you can move on.
Cardboard Box Tunnel
This was the best part of the obstacle course. I took a large cardboard box and opened the bottom. I then taped the ends together to make the tunnel. Then only thing is that it doesn’t stay up without support. So I placed a few patio chairs on either sides to help keep it up. It worked like a charm.
Bucket Weave
I used a few large buckets to create a zig zag obstacle.
Bike Ride
In this section they had to grab their bikes and ride up the side of our deck and back. A short distance but a lot of fun.
Backyard Bowling Challenge Obstacle Course
The next part of the course was a bowling challenge. Once they come back from their short ride they had to safely put away their bike and then pick up a ball and knock down as many pins as they could. I used a big ball so knocking them down was pretty easy!
Zig Zag Walk
Next, I used painter’s tape to create a zig zag balance line.
Cowboy/Cowgirl Walk
Next, I used painter’s tape to create two straight lines on the grass. Here they had to walk along the lines like a cowgirl or cowboy. Legs wide and low!

Hop the Lines
This was such a hit, we will definitely be doing it again this summer, probably adding water.
Once they were done the course, they did it all over again in the opposite direction! They played with this for the rest of the afternoon so all my efforts were well worth it!
