WASHI TAPE CUTTING

An easy to set up activity that develops fine motor scissors skill using one of our favourite craft materials – washi tape!

This activity can be combined with any other washi tape activities. For instance in Washi Tape Pumkin my three year old cuts all the washi tape used to make the pumpkin.

Here’s what you’ll need to get started.

• Washi Tape
• Toddler Scissors
• Cardboard roll

Set Up

Get out your washi tape and stick about 5-6 pieces on the edge of a table.

Each piece should be long enough for your toddler or preschooler to hold on to with one hand and to cut three or four pieces off with the other.

When I did this activity, my daughter got so excited that she started cutting the washi tape as soon as I stuck it on to the edge of the table. So be prepared to get more strips for them if they are fast cutters.

After she cut off pieces of tape I had her use them to decorate a cardboard roll.

Teaching Scissor Skills

Teaching proper scissors skills is a process that doesn’t start with scissors in hand. The very first steps in fact should start with scissors no where near your toddler.

Tearing paper activities are the best ways to prepare your toddler for cutting with scissors.
