Alma Thomas Art Project for Black History Month

Servings: 0

Ingredients

  • Construction paper in a variety of colors
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • White card stock as your canvas

Instructions

  • Find Inspiration: Start by looking at some of Alma Thomas's artworks. Notice the colors she uses and how she arranges small pieces to create a larger image.
  • Cut Your Paper: Using the construction paper, cut out a small circle for the center of the project and then cut various colors into 1 inch strips and then cut the strips into small squares or rectangles. Thomas often used circles and short brush strokes in her work. We will glue the small squares or rectangles around the circle in gradually growing circle of color.
  • Arrange Your Pieces: Before gluing, lay out your pieces on the card stock to decide on your final design. Think about how Thomas used colors and patterns to create movement.
  • Glue Down: Once you're happy with your layout, start gluing your pieces onto the card stock. Work from the center and glue your colours outwards. Be sure to glue all the way to the corners. Its ok if the ends of the squares go over the edge of the page. Once you are done you can trim the excess off.
  • Display Your Art: After the glue has dried, find a spot to display your work. It's a wonderful conversation starter about art, history, and creativity.
