Coffee Filter Flowers for Mother's Day

Servings: 0

Ingredients

  • Coffee filters
  • Liquid watercolors
  • Eye droppers
  • Muffin tin (for the liquid watercolors)
  • Tray
  • Scissors
  • Green paper straws
  • Glue

Instructions

  • Take a coffee filter and fold it in half, then again, and again, until it’s folded into eighths. Using scissors, cut out a petal shape around the top, being careful not to cut all the way down. When you unfold the filter, you’ll have a full circle with a petal pattern.
  • Pour your liquid watercolors into a muffin tin. If you don't have liquid watercolors, dilute food coloring with just a small amount of water as an alternative. Place the coffee filters on a tray—this helps keep your surfaces from getting stained with the color. Use the eye droppers to apply the colors to the filters, watch as the colors spread and absorb into the filter. Make sure to cover the entire filter in vibrant hues. Let it dry completely.
  • Once the coffee filters are dry, take one and gather the center to create a point by twisting it slightly. This forms the first layer of your flower. Take a second coffee filter, repeat the gathering and twisting, and attach it to the first, creating a fuller flower. Apply a dab of glue to the base and attach it to a green paper straw, holding it in place for a few seconds to ensure it sticks.
  • To display your flowers, grab a mason jar and fill it with rock salt or any other stable material to anchor your creations. Insert the stems of your coffee filter flowers into the jar. You now have a vibrant, cheerful bouquet that’s perfect for Mother’s Day or as a lovely springtime decoration.
