Fall is almost here and the squirrels in our neighbourhood are busy trying to find and bury all the acorns that they can before the cold weather kicks in.

On a recent walk through our local park, I pointed out these busy little squirrels to my twins and an idea for a fun fine motor activity came to me! We could pretend to be squirrels burying acorns in the dirt!

As soon as we got home, I set up this quick scooping sensory bin for my 18 month toddlers and it was an instant hit!

Bury the Acorns: A Simple Toddler Activity

Grab your supplies. Set out a large sensory bin and place the muffin tins inside. Explain to your toddler that they are a little squirrel and that they have to bury their acorns in the dirt for winter. This was much easy to explain to my toddlers since we only just saw the squirrels doing this very thing outside. Another great way to explain this to your toddler is to read a book about it!

Invite your toddler to place an acorn or two in each muffin tin container. I always show my twins how to do something first as well as explaining it verbally.

Next, add the black beans to the sensory bin and hand your toddler a spoon. Invite them to scoop the beans up and cover the acorns. Again, I demonstrated burying the acorns to my twins as well as explaining it verbally.

Not these ones! I bought them. After years of collecting grubby ones I decided to get these when I saw them at the dollar store.
