Feeding the Fish: A Pom Pom Sorting Activity

We initially did this activity during our under the sea unit but it quickly became such a hit that we have done it on its own several times. There is a little bit of prep, but once it’s done you’ll have an activity you can pull out every few weeks.

Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

Supplies:

Stackable Cups
Pom Poms (a variety of colours)
Construction Paper (different colours)
Pencil
Scissors

Set up:

CUTTING THE FINS

First fold the construction paper in half and cut along the line. Save one half for another project and draw the shape of a fish fin on the other half.

You have the option of cutting each coloured fin individually or 2 or 3 together. I personally do a bunch together; as much as my scissors can handle.

I laminated my fins so that they would last longer but this is not necessary.

Place the tips of the construction paper fins under the same colour stackable bowl and there you go – a fish!

FEEDING TIME

Now comes the fun part. Feeding the hungry fish coloured pom poms. My toddler loved this part. She was two when we first did it and she got so excited about feeding them that she forgot to colour sort.

I wasn’t to worried about it though. She was having fun and we were still talking about colours.

By the time she was 2.5 years old she had this game down cold and even was able to sort based on the different shades of colours.

A BEAUTIFUL SURPRISE

When you are done, lift up the stackable bowl to reveal perfect pom pom piles beneath. If you have been following me on Instagram you will recognize it as my old logo!
