Here is a quick and fun counting activity that you can do in a pinch, while cooking with a baby on your hip (or in my case two!).
All you need are a few supplies (see list below) and a curious toddler or preschooler.
Here’s how you can get started:

- Window Markers
or Dry Erase Markers
- Foam Numbers Bath Toys
- Small Bowl
- Water
- Paper towel
Set Up
Use the window markers or dry erase markers to write out numbers 1 to 9 leaving a blank line every second or third number.
These window markers are great fun and I often just hand them over to my 3 year old and let her draw on our windows to her heart’s content. They are easy to cleanup on the window (with just water and paper towel) and from my experience even from non-window or mirror surfaces (although you should always double check yourself and keep an eye on your child so they do not write all over your walls).
For this activity I handed her a bowl of foam numbers and a bowl with a small amount of water in it.
The foam bath numbers stick to the window with just a small amount of water so don’t give them too much.
Then I asked her to fill in the blanks. She did this by counting from the start.
When she came to a blank she searched for that number, dipped it in a little water and stuck it above the blank space.
She continued until all the blanks were filled.
Total Hit
I was not sure if she would find this fun, but she totally did and asked me to write up different numbers on the window for her to do!
After the second time, I made the activity a little bit more difficult for her by leaving two blank spaces instead of one.
