There are several numeracy skills that your kindergartner will need to learn by the time they enter grade 1.
They should be able to identify all the number from 1 to 20. They should be able to write the numbers 1 to 20. And they should be able to count to 100 in ones and tens.
Teaching your kindergarten aged child to count to 100 need not be boring or hard. Here is fun and easy way to get them counting and then won’t even realize that they are learning.
When I told my happy four year old that we were going to do an counting to 100 activity she got a little intimidated. But as we started she quickly forgot that she was counting and when she got to 100 she was so proud of herself!
Here’s how to get your kindergartner counting
Dump all your pom poms into your sensory bin or a large enough container to hold them all.
On your dot stickers, write the numbers 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100. Then stick them on to your ten containers. Make sure the containers you use for 100 is the largest as you will be added all 100 pom poms into it at the end. Also glass or clear containers are best so that they can see their progress!
Before we started counting we reviewed counting to 100 by tens by pointing to the numbers on the jars.
Then I had her fill each jar with ten pom pom gum balls. Once she reached ten I had her continue from 11 in the next jar – 20.
We continued until we reached 100 jar. At this jar I had her fill it with ten pom poms counting from 91 to 100.
Counting by Tens
Once she was done this, the best part was still to come.
I told her we had to fill the 100 jar with all the pom pom gum balls from the other jars!
This turned into a fun pom pom gum ball pouring activity where she also was counting by tens and not even realizing she was learning!
