For this super simple process art activity all you need are some blocks (we used MegaBloks, but this would work with Duplo or Lego), paint and brushes. And because I love making activities last as long as possible it is broken down into 3 parts. I will show parts 1 and 2 here and part 3 in a separate post called MegaBlok Washing!
Here’s what you’ll need:
Supplies:
(This post contains affiliate links for your convenience)
- Plastic blocks such as MegaBloks, Duplo, or Lego
- Paint brushes – we used our Jolly B for Kids Deluxe Kids Art & Craft Set
- Washable paint
Set up:
I used a sensory bin to help contain the mess but it can also be done on a plastic sheet. I usually use the plastic table cloths that you can buy from the dollar store. They are sturdy and when you are finished you can either reuse it or toss it.
First You Build
The first part of this activity is to build something with the MegaBloks. We built random structures, nothing fancy and added flowers on top.
Then You Paint
For the painting part of this activity, I used our IKEA rainbow bowls to hold the paint. You can use anything from egg cartons to paper plates. I like these bowls because they are colourful and it helps to increase the interest of my toddler when I bring out the activity.
Another great way to help get your toddler interested in new activities is to use new tools. This was the first time that we used our Jolly B for Kids Deluxe Kids Art & Craft Set so she spent a lot of time testing them out by inspecting their different textures and mixing them in the paint bowls. They are great for toddlers as they have a chubby handle perfect for little hands.
My toddler liked to paint just the tops of the MegaBlok structures, so I gently (as this is a process art activity I didn’t want to give too much direction) encouraged her to paint the entire structure as it will make the final part of this activity that much more fun!
Your final product is messy painted MegaBloks in need of a good washing. TIP: do the following activity right away before all that great paint dries. So instead of doing it yourself get your toddler to do it! Check out the next post MegaBlok Washing for details.
