Watercolor Nature Art

Some kids love glitter. Some love slime. But give my kids watercolor paint, nature like a pile of leaves and flowers, and permission to experiment freely? That’s the kind of activity that completely pulls them in.

This watercolor nature art activity is equal parts art project, science experiment, and outdoor exploration. Kids drip colored water onto flowers or leaves, swirl colors together, and discover patterns and prints they didn’t expect. The final artwork almost looks stunning—soft watercolor backgrounds layered with detailed nature impressions and delicate textures.

What I love most about this activity is that there’s no “right way” to do it. Every single piece turns out wildly different, and that freedom is exactly what makes kids keep coming back to it.

If you’re looking for a summer art activity that feels calming, creative, and genuinely engaging, this one is absolutely worth trying.

Why You’ll Love This Watercolor Nature Art

  • Encourages creativity and experimentation
  • Combines art and outdoor play
  • Helps kids connect with nature
  • Easy to adapt for different ages
  • Creates beautiful process art
  • Surprisingly calming and absorbing

This is one of those activities where kids naturally slow down and focus. They become fascinated by how paint spreads across petals, how leaf veins appear through watercolor, and how different textures create completely different effects on paper.

Materials

  • Watercolor paper or thick cardstock
  • Watercolor paints, Liquid watercolors or food coloring
  • Paintbrushes
  • Pipettes or droppers
  • small jars or containers
  • Leaves
  • Flowers
  • Grass
  • Small nature finds
  • Water
  • Tray or outdoor table setup

Optional:

  • Spray bottle with water
  • Paper towels
  • Nature collection basket

How to Set Up the Art Activity

  1. Start by heading outside to collect nature treasures. Encourage kids to look for a mix of:
  • Leaves with interesting veins
  • Flowers with layered petals
  • Tiny plants or grasses
  • Textured natural materials
  1. Once you’ve gathered your supplies, place watercolor paper on a tray or outdoor table. Then start by wetting the paper with plain water and a paint brush.
  2. Then place the leaves and flowers directly onto top.
  1. Next, invite kids to use droppers or brushes to drip watercolor paint over and around the edges of the nature items. As the colors spread across the paper, the shapes and textures underneath begin creating beautiful prints and outlines.
  2. As the paper dries, the leaves and flowers leave behind detailed impressions, soft silhouettes, and layered textures that look almost professionally artistic.
  3. Let the paper dry completely before removing the leaves, petals and flowers to reveal the magic underneath!

Tips for the Best Results

  1. Use Real Watercolor Paper. Thicker paper makes a huge difference. Thin paper tends to wrinkle and tear under heavy watercolor use.
  2. Let Kids Layer Colors. The most beautiful results usually happen when children overlap colors instead of sticking to one.
  3. All the paper to dry completely. Don’t remove the natural items from the paper before the paint has fully dried. This will allow the texture and shape of the items to form on the paper.
  4. Take It Outside. This activity is perfect for outdoor art time because kids can fully explore without worrying about mess.
  5. Try Pressing the Nature Items. Some kids enjoy gently pressing flowers or leaves into the wet paint to create even stronger prints and patterns.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
