Looking for a simple outdoor activity that gets kids exploring, observing, and connecting with nature? This Nature Color Hunt might be one of the easiest activities you’ll try all summer.
Over the years, I’ve learned that my kids don’t always need complicated setups or expensive supplies to stay engaged. Sometimes the simplest activities become the most memorable. This colorful nature hunt combines outdoor exploration, color recognition, and sensory learning into one easy activity that works for toddlers, preschoolers, and even older kids.
The best part? Kids suddenly start noticing details they would normally walk right past.
A bright yellow flower. A tiny purple blossom. A piece of bark that’s almost black. Soft green moss hiding beneath a tree.
Their entire neighborhood or even backyard becomes a giant scavenger hunt.
Why You’ll Love This Nature Color Hunt
- Gets kids excited about being outdoors
- Encourages observation and critical thinking
- Builds color recognition skills
- Easy to set up with materials you already have
- Great for mixed-age groups
- Creates beautiful opportunities for conversation and learning
This activity is perfect for backyards, parks, nature trails, botanical gardens, campgrounds, or even neighborhood walks.
Materials
- Empty 12-count egg carton
- Paint or markers
- Paintbrush
- Nature collection basket (optional)
How to Set Up the Nature Color Hunt
- Start by painting each section of the egg carton a different color. Allow the paint to dry completely before heading outside.

- Once your color palette is ready, invite your child to search for natural items that match each color. Children can place flowers, leaves, seeds, bark, moss, feathers, stones, petals, pinecones, or other nature treasures into the matching compartments.

- The challenge quickly becomes surprisingly exciting. Can they find something for every color? Can they discover multiple shades of green? What can they use for black? These simple questions naturally encourage observation and problem-solving.

Language Development
Nature walks create endless opportunities for conversation.
You might hear:
- “This flower is darker than that one.”
- “This leaf looks more yellow-green.”
- “I found something that matches the black section!”
These observations help build descriptive vocabulary and critical thinking skills.
Connection to Nature
One of my favorite things about this activity is how it helps children slow down. Instead of rushing through a walk, kids become curious investigators searching for colors everywhere they look.
Tips for Success
- Let Kids Lead. Avoid pointing out every item for them. Part of the fun is making discoveries independently.
- Talk About Shades. Older children can explore different shades and tones rather than matching only exact colors.
- Use What You Find Naturally. Encourage children to collect fallen leaves, petals, and nature treasures whenever possible rather than picking large amounts of living plants.
- Keep a Flexible Mindset. Not every color will be easy to find depending on the season. That’s okay. Sometimes the challenge of finding a particular color becomes the most exciting part.
- Turn It Into a Seasonal Activity. Nature looks completely different throughout the year. Try this activity in spring, summer, fall, and winter and compare what colors children discover during each season.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What age is this activity best for?
This activity works wonderfully for toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners, and elementary-aged children. Older kids often enjoy the challenge of finding more unusual shades and colors.
2. Can I do this with multiple children?
Absolutely. Kids can work together to fill one carton or each child can have their own.
3. What if we can’t find every color?
That’s completely normal. Treat it like an exploration rather than a competition. Sometimes the missing colors lead to the best conversations and discoveries.
