This Mother’s Day silhouette flower painting is one of those crafts that looks absolutely stunning when it’s finished — but is secretly super simple for kids to make. The fluffy painted flowers create the prettiest textured background while the silhouette of a mother and child turns it into a keepsake-worthy piece of art.
It’s bright, bold, and honestly looks frame-worthy when it’s done.
Kids will love stamping the colorful flowers all over the page and then peeling away the silhouette to reveal the surprise image underneath. It’s messy in the best possible way and makes such a special homemade Mother’s Day gift.
What You’ll Need
- Black cardstock or black construction paper
- White cardstock or thick white paper
- Tempera paint or acrylic paint
- Small plastic bags
- Elastic bands or twist ties
- Paintbrush
- Scissors or craft knife
- Pencil
- Mother and child silhouette template (download below)
- Green paint for leaves (optional)
How to Make the Mother’s Day Silhouette Painting
Step 1: Create the Flower Stamp
Start by making your flower stamp. Grab a plastic bag, the kind you get from a grocery store and turn it inside out. Gather the bag together tightly to create a small balloon filled with air. You can fill it with cotton balls if that make it easier to create the balloon. Secure it with an elastic band so it forms a fluffy round stamp shape. Make sure the bottom of the balloon is the crinkled bottom corner of the plastic bag.
This is what creates the beautiful textured flower look. You can make multiple stamps if you want different flower sizes.
Step 2: Prepare the Silhouette
Print a silhouette of a mother and child onto paper. Carefully cut it out. Place the silhouette in the center of a piece of black cardstock. You can lightly tape it down with painter tape if needed so it stays in place while painting. The silhouette acts like a mask and keeps that area paint-free.
Step 3: Stamp the Flowers
Use a paint brush to paint the bottom of the plastic balloon. Press it around the silhouette to create large textured flowers. Repeat with different paint colors until the page is mostly filled. You can add white paint to the colored paint to add definition to the flowers.
Overlap some flowers slightly to make the background look full and layered. The fluffy texture from the bag stamp makes the flowers look almost real.
Step 4: Add Leaves and Details
Use a paintbrush or fingertip to add little green leaves between the flowers. kids can also add dots, tiny painted stems, or extra texture around the page.
Step 5: Reveal the Silhouette
Once the paint is dry, carefully peel away the silhouette template. This is the magical part. Underneath, you’ll reveal the clean black silhouette of the mother and child surrounded by colorful flowers. It looks so impressive every single time.
Tips for Success
- Thick paint works best for bold flower prints.
- Don’t overload the stamp with paint or the flowers can become blurry.
- Let kids overlap colors slightly for a more natural flower garden look.
- Tape the silhouette lightly so paint doesn’t sneak underneath.
