Cotton Pad Apple Craft

This Cotton Pad Apple Craft is an easy fall activity for preschoolers and kindergarteners that combines art with a little color-mixing fun. Kids use cotton pads to fill an apple shape, then use eye droppers to add liquid color to the cotton. It’s simple to set up and gives kids plenty of opportunity to work independently.

This apple craft is a good choice for a fall theme, an apple unit, preschool activities, or an afternoon craft at home. Using an eye dropper also adds a fine motor component that makes the activity more than just a simple art project.

Supplies for the Cotton Pad Apple

You will need:

• Cardboard
• Pencil
• Cotton pads
• Glue
• Eye droppers
• Small bowls
• Water
• Food coloring or liquid watercolors

How to Make a Cotton Pad Apple

1. Start by using a pencil to draw a large apple shape on a piece of cardboard. Keep the shape fairly simple so kids have plenty of space to add the cotton pads.
2. Cover the cardboard apple with glue. Place cotton pads over the apple until the cardboard is covered. The pads can overlap slightly if needed. Press them gently into the glue and allow them to stick in place.
3. Next, prepare your colors. Pour a small amount of water into several small bowls. Add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl and stir. You can also use liquid watercolors instead of food coloring.
4. Give your child an eye dropper and show them how to squeeze it to pick up the colored water. Drop the color directly onto the cotton pads.
5. The cotton will quickly absorb the liquid and the color will begin to spread. Kids can make a traditional red or green apple or experiment with several colors on the same apple.
6. Continue adding color until the cotton pads are covered. Set the finished apple aside and allow it to dry completely.

Turn It Into a Simple Color-Mixing Activity

This apple craft for kids can also be used to explore color mixing.

Prepare bowls with red, yellow, and blue water and let kids experiment with placing different colors next to each other on the cotton pads. Ask what they think will happen when two colors meet.

Try red and yellow, blue and yellow, or red and blue. Kids can watch the colors spread through the absorbent cotton and begin mixing together.

For younger kids, simply naming the colors as they work is an easy way to add learning without turning the craft into a formal lesson.

Why Use Eye Droppers?

Using eye droppers is a simple way for kids to practice fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. They have to squeeze the dropper, release it to collect the liquid, move it over the apple, and squeeze again to release the color.

It also gives children more control over where they put the color than pouring or painting would.

Tips for Making This Cotton Pad Apple Craft

1. Protect your table before starting. Food coloring and liquid watercolors can stain some surfaces, clothing, and hands.
2. Don’t add too much water to the bowls. You only need enough for kids to fill their eye droppers.
3. Use sturdy cardboard for the apple base. The cotton pads will hold quite a bit of water, so thin paper can become soggy or tear.
4. Encourage kids to add the colored water a little at a time. Saturating the cotton pads too quickly can cause the water to run off the craft.
5. Place the finished apple on a tray or washable surface while it dries. Depending on how much liquid was used, drying may take several hours.

For a group activity, prepare several bowls of colored water and multiple eye droppers so children don’t have to wait for a turn.
