It’s a fun choice for a Halloween preschool theme, classroom art center, kindergarten activity, daycare, or a creative afternoon at home.
Materials
You only need a few supplies:
- Free printable cauldron
- Washable paint
- Paper towel roll
- Paper plates
- Dish soap
- Glitter, optional
You’ll also want a little water for mixing the bubbly paint solution.
How to Make Bubbling Cauldron Process Art
- Start by printing the free cauldron printable. Place the printable on your work surface. Since you’ll be working with paint and bubbles, you may want to protect the table underneath before getting started.
- Pour a small amount of washable paint onto a paper plate. Add a several drops of dish soap and gently mix everything together. You want the mixture to be thin enough to create bubbles while still having enough paint to leave colorful prints on the paper. Use a different plate for each color. I suggest only using two Halloween colors for the cauldron. I found more than two colors got a bit messy.

- Cut a paper towel roll into shorter sections so it is easier for little hands to hold. Dip one end of the cardboard roll into the paint and dish soap mixture. Lift it up and you should see that bottom of the tube cover in a soap film. If you. dont see this after several dips, add a bit more dish soap and mix.

- Gently print the tube on the paper above the cauldron, if you’re lucky a bubble will form on the paper and stay long enough for your little one to pop it! As they pop, they’ll leave behind colorful circles and interesting bubble patterns that look like a magical potion bubbling right out of the cauldron. Sometime that happened and sometimes the bubble popped on it own but the resulting art looked like bubble were actually coming from the cauldron!
- Optional: For a little extra Halloween magic, sprinkle glitter over some of the wet bubble prints. Shake off any excess glitter and leave the artwork flat to dry.

Helpful Tips
Test your mixture first. If you’re not getting many bubbles, add a little more dish soap. If the bubble prints are too pale, add a little more washable paint.

Cut the paper towel roll into smaller tubes. Shorter pieces are easier for preschoolers to hold and require less blowing.
Use a separate tube for each color. This helps keep your potion colors bright instead of immediately mixing together.
Don’t aim for perfect bubbles. Some bubbles will make complete circles, while others will pop, splatter, overlap, or leave unusual shapes. That’s part of the process!
Add glitter while the paint is wet. If you’re using glitter, sprinkle it on right after making the bubble prints so it has something to stick to.

Why Process Art?
The fun of this activity isn’t about making every cauldron look the same.
Children get to experiment with what happens when they layer one color over another, make lots of bubbles, or use only a few.
They’re exploring cause and effect, color, texture, and printmaking while creating something completely their own.
You can encourage that exploration with simple questions:
“What happens when the bubbles pop?”
“What do you think is inside your magical potion?”
There’s no need for children to copy a finished example. Let the bubbling paint lead the way!
Grab the free printable cauldron, mix up your bubbly paint, and start brewing some Halloween art!
