Kitchen sensory bin using birdseed! Perfect indoor or outdoor sensory bin activity!

If your house is anything like mine you have tons of play kitchen food and toys that get used a lot. The best purchase I ever made for my daughter was to buy her a play kitchen. It is the one toy that gets played with everyday.

Every once and a while I like to change things up and set up a kitchen sensory bin using different sensory materials as the food. We have done rice and bubbles in the past and both were a total hit.

This Fall I decided to do a birdseed kitchen. I had a big bag of birdseed that I neglected to use in the spring and I knew that it would be lots of fun to play with!

Set Up

From the very first time you start playing with sensory bins with your little one you should set some ground rules. Let them know that they should do their best to keep the mess inside the bin.

When we first started messy activities like this I would always tape a large plastic table cloth (the dollar store kind) under the bin to catch any pieces that flew out.

But at the end of the day I did not want to be nagging her all the time to not make a mess, I just wanted her to play. The plastic sheet made cleaning up a breeze.

Imaginative Play

This type of sensory bin is so great for letting your child develop their imaginative play skills as well as their creativity.

This is something children do so well and don’t really need a lot assistance with by the time they are in preschool.

When my daughter was younger, I would sit with her and we would play together talking about what we were making or could make.

At 3 year old, I can leave her alone (although I’m always near by keeping a watchful eye on things) with an activity like this. I love to listen to her come up with fantastic recipes and ideas for a meal all on her own!
