INSIDE: Coffee Filter Fireworks craft is a great way to celebrate important holidays such as New Years Eve, Fourth of July, Canada Day or Victoria Day! They are a lot of fun to make a fantastic fine motor activity for toddlers, preschoolers and older kids.

Making Fireworks

Crafting fireworks is a lot of fun especially for little ones who may not stay awake long enough to see real fireworks at night. In the summer when it doesn’t get dark till late it is rare that my little kids actually get to see the fireworks on holidays so making these one out of coffee filters is a fun way to get them involved.

Coffee Filter Fireworks Craft for New Years Eve or Fourth of July

Gather your supplies.

Cut your coffee filters into different sizes from small to medium to medium large. Leave one coffee filter the original size.

Place one coffee filter on a plate or baking sheet to contain the mess.

Grab a muffin tin or a few bowls and add a drop or two of gel food colouring. Mix it with water. I used a muffin tin and placed one colour in each section. We made 4 different coloured fireworks so I mix 4 different colours. We didn’t mix colours but you can totally try doing that. I would just choose colours that when mixed don’t create brown. For instance give them colours that are close to each other on the colour wheel like red, orange and yellow and not colours like blue and orange.

Hand your little one an eye dropper and invite them to squeeze the coloured water all over the coffee filter until its complete covered.

Repeat with the other coffee filters. Set them aside to fully dry. If your little one can’t wait, take a blowdryer and let them dry them faster.

Time to Make Fireworks

Next, grab your fully coffee filters and a pair of scissors. Make cuts all along the sides of the coffee filter to turn the circle into a bursting firework! For younger kids, hold and turn the coffee filter circle around for them as they cut. Be sure not to make cuts too deep into the center of the circle. You want to keep the center of the circle intact. Only cut along the outside of the circle.

Take a sheet of black construction paper and glue. Place a small amount of glue in the center of the coffee filter firework and glue it down on the black construction paper.

Repeat with the other coffee filters.

Age Suitability

This activity is good for kids 3 years and up. My kids are 3.5, 3.5, and 7.5 year old.
