Practice learning shapes with this fun paint the shapes activity for preschoolers and kindergartners. This easy activity is a great hands-on early math activity for developing familiarity with geometric shapes.
Learning geometric shapes is an important skills in early math. This colorful painting shape activity is a fun way to incorporate learning shapes with art! Not only are they learning shapes but they are also learning to read a code. While painting inside the shapes, they are also learning how to draw the shape and recognize colours.
How to Set Up Paint the Shapes Activity
Grab your cereal box and open it up and flatten it out with the plain cardboard in the inside facing up.
Take your second cereal box and cut thin 1inch strips.
Use a glue gun to glue the thin strips to the flat cardboard surface in the shape of different shapes, such as circle, triangle, square, rectangle, diamond.
Make the colouring code. Take a sheet of white paper and draw out the shapes then colour in each shape a different colour.
Pour out paint in the same colours on to a paper plate or paint pallet and invite your preschooler or kindergartener to paint the shapes according to the colouring code.
This activity is good for kids 3 years and up. My kids are 4.5, 4.5 and 8 years old.
The mess level for this activity is moderate. Protect clothing and surface from paint.

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.
In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.
Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
Play is at the core of learning during the early years and it can take many forms. One of the most important of these is sensory play because it engages all of a child’s senses (taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing) and has a enoumous positive impact on brain development.
Our Sensory Play Kits are some fun and easy ways to keep your child engaged while at the same time using sensory play to nurture their mind!
