Have you tried yarn as a sensory activity? Well after reading this you will definitely want to. It’s soft, versatile and comes in all different colours. Sounds familiar? Yarn is like a long thin pom pom.

Yarn Kitchen is a super easy and fun sensory bin activity that was a big hit with my almost 4 year old but is perfect for toddlers as well as preschoolers!

Easy Set Up for Yarn Kitchen

The set up for this activity is very easy. First, fill your sensory bin with all the yarn scraps you have.

YARNKITCHEN

If you don’t have yarn scraps, you can either cut a ball of yarn to make scraps yourself or if your little one can use scissors that can cut yarn, have them do it. This is a fun activity all on its own. (Believe me you will definitely use your yarn scraps again for this and other activities so don’t throw them away!)

Then gather some toy kitchen utensils, pots and pans (see above list).

The yarn scraps in the activity play the roll of food so there is no need to add toy food to the bin.

Pretend Play

This is a great activity for pretend play and developing your toddler or preschooler’s imagination.

My almost four year old and I pretended to make cakes, salads, coffee and smoothies.

YARNKITCHEN4

She pretended that the different coloured yarn was different food. Yellow was banana, red was cranberries, blue was blueberries and purple was oatmeal (not every colour made sense!).

Then I added her dolls and she pretended to serve them, while I was able to duck out and get a few things done around the house.

Easy Clean Up

The great thing about this sensory bin is that the clean up is super easy. If some yarn happens to leave the bin it is super easy to pick it up and put back! When we done playing my preschooler helped me pick up all the stray yarn.
