Materials

  • Homemade gray, black and red play dough. Find the play dough recipe here.
  • Star Wars themed toys and figurines (such as mini figures, spaceships, or lightsabers)
  • Rolling pins, cookie cutters, and other play dough tools
  • Appetizer tray with sections

How to Set Up DIY Star Wars Play Dough Activity

Begin by making your homemade play dough. You can find recipe here. For the gray play dough, you can mix together equal parts of black and white play dough or only add a few drops of black food colouring. For the black play dough, you can use double the black food coloring to your recipe. To make the red play dough, use red food coloring or add a few drops of liquid watercolor.

Set up your play dough invitation to play by laying out your play dough and toys on a table or play mat or if you have a plastic appetizer dish you can use that. I got mine from the dollar store and its great for play dough activities like this. You can create different stations for each color of play dough, or mix them all together for a multi-colored Star Wars universe.

Add Star Wars themed toys and figurines to the play dough. You can place them on top of the play dough, bury them inside, or create scenes and scenarios using the toys.

How to Play

Encourage your kids to use their imaginations and creativity to create their own Star Wars stories and characters. They can use the rolling pins and cookie cutters to create different shapes and characters, or use their hands to mold and sculpt the play dough.

As they play, you can introduce new items to the play dough invitation to play, such as glitter or small rocks to create texture and interest. You can also encourage your kids to experiment with mixing the colors of play dough to create new shades and hues.

When playtime is over, store the play dough in airtight containers or ziplock bags. It can be kept for a few weeks, but make sure to check it before each use to ensure it’s still fresh and pliable.

Tips

  • If you don’t have Star Wars themed toys, you can print out pictures of your favorite characters and glue them onto cardboard or popsicle sticks to create your own DIY figures.
  • For an added sensory experience, you can add different scents to your homemade play dough, such as vanilla extract or essential oils.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 airs in the summer of 2023! We were also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
