Halloween crafts are always a hit with my kids, and this DIY Witch Cutting Activity brings together creativity and skill-building in a fun and spooky way. This activity is all about practicing scissor skills while creating a cute witch with colorful hair. By following the lines drawn on the witch’s “hair,” kids will get to reveal the hidden witch face underneath as they cut along. It’s a perfect way to blend a festive Halloween craft with an educational task that helps young children improve their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

One of the best things about this craft is its simplicity. You don’t need many materials, and the set-up is quick, making it great for an afternoon activity at home or in the classroom. Your child will love revealing the witch’s face as they cut through the zigzag, straight, or wavy lines, and it’s a playful way to make learning fun. Plus, it’s a perfect Halloween-themed introduction to cutting practice for young learners!

Why You’ll Love This Activity

You’ll love this DIY witch cutting activity because it combines creativity with skill development, making it both fun and educational. Cutting along different types of lines helps your child practice precision while the excitement of uncovering the witch’s face keeps them engaged. The best part? It’s super easy to prepare and clean up, and kids will have a blast working on their witch’s hairstyle while strengthening their fine motor skills.

What You’ll Need

  • Green, orange, and purple construction paper
  • Sharpie
  • Kid scissors
  • Glue
  • Masking tape

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the witch’s hair:

Cut the orange construction paper into rectangles. These will be the witch’s hair strands. Using a Sharpie, draw lines down each rectangle. Make the lines different—some can be straight, some zigzag, and others wavy—to create varying cutting challenges for your child.

2. Cut out the witch’s hat and head:

Use the purple construction paper to cut out 3 or 4 witch hats, making sure they are the same width as the orange rectangles. Then, cut a semi-circle shape from the green construction paper to make the witch’s head.

3. Assemble the witch:

Glue the orange rectangles (hair) to the top of the witch’s head, letting them hang down like hair. Next, glue the purple witch hat on top of the head, covering the top part of the hair.

4. Invite your child to cut:

Once everything is glued in place, invite your child to use their scissors to cut along the lines you’ve drawn on the witch’s hair. As they cut, the witch’s face will slowly be revealed! Once they cut along the lines they can cut all the hair off close to the hat to fully reveal the witch’s face!

TIP: Tape down each witch head to make it easier for your child to cut. That way they can focus on cutting without the witch moving!

This activity makes learning how to cut fun and engaging, and the colorful witch design adds a festive Halloween twist. Perfect for little ones practicing their scissor skills!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
