A sensory bin filled with colored rice is always a hit, but when you add a bottle cap turkey to the mix, it takes the fun to a whole new level! This Bottle Cap Turkey Rice Sensory Activity is a playful way for kids to explore textures, colors, and sorting while also working on their fine motor skills. When I set this up for my kids, they were fascinated by the bright colors and couldn’t wait to dig in with their scoopers and spoons. It’s one of those activities that’s so engaging it keeps them busy for ages!
You’ll love this sensory activity because it’s simple to make, affordable, and versatile. It’s not just about fun—kids are practicing hand-eye coordination, improving their fine motor skills, and even experimenting with early math concepts like sorting and measuring. Plus, the setup is reusable, so you can bring it out again whenever you need an activity that keeps little hands occupied.

Why You’ll Love This Sensory Fine Motor Activity
This activity blends creativity, sensory play, and fine motor skill-building into one fun and festive experience. Kids can sort rice by color, use scoopers and spoons to fill the turkey bottle caps, or simply enjoy the sensory aspect of running their hands through the rice. It’s a fantastic way to keep them entertained while encouraging hands-on learning.
Materials You’ll Need
For the Bottle Cap Turkey:
- Cardboard (for the base)
- Red, orange, yellow, and brown bottle caps
- Hot glue gun
- Brown, red, and orange construction paper
- Googly eyes
- Glue stick
For the Sensory Bin:
- Red, yellow, and brown dyed rice
- Red split peas
- Scooper and spoon
- Sensory bin or shallow container
Step-by-Step Instructions
Make the Bottle Cap Turkey
- Cut a large oval or circle from the cardboard for the turkey’s base.
- Cut a figure 8 out of brown construction paper. Add googly eyes, a red snood, and an orange beak using construction paper and a glue stick. Glue this to the center of the cardboard.
- Arrange the colorful bottle caps around the edge of the turkey body in a fan shape to represent feathers. Alternate red, yellow, orange, and brown for a colorful effect. Use the hot glue gun to attach them securely. Let it dry.

Dye the Rice
- Divide uncooked rice into four separate bags or bowls.
- Add a few drops of food coloring (red, yellow, or brown) and a teaspoon of vinegar or rubbing alcohol to each bag. Shake until the rice is evenly coated. Find a full recipe here.
- Spread the rice on parchment paper to dry completely.
- Add the rice and red split peas to a sensory bin. Add scoopers and spoons.

Set Up the Sensory Bin
- Pour the colored rice into a sensory bin or shallow container, not mixing the colors yet and keeping them separate for sorting.
- Add the bottle cap turkey to the center of the bin or beside it.
- Include scoopers and spoons for kids to use in their play.

How to Play
Kids can use the scoopers and spoons to fill the bottle caps on the turkey with matching colors of rice, practicing sorting and fine motor skills. They can also explore the sensory bin by scooping, pouring, and mixing the rice. Encourage them to create patterns or count how many spoonfuls it takes to fill each bottle cap. The bright colors and turkey theme make this activity extra engaging and festive.
