Rainy days got your kiddos stuck indoors? Turn those cloudy days into something creative with this adorable Bubble Wrap Umbrella Craft! Bubble wrap isn’t just for popping (though that’s always fun)—it’s also an awesome tool for creating cool, textured art. Plus, this project is simple, budget-friendly, and sure to brighten up even the gloomiest days. Let’s get started!

Why You’ll Love This Bubble Wrap Umbrella Craft

This craft checks all the boxes: it’s engaging, sensory-rich, and great for developing fine motor skills. The fun texture from bubble wrap makes this idea super fun tiny hands. Plus, you probably already have everything you need at home. It’s perfect for toddlers, preschoolers, and even older kids who enjoy experimenting with different art techniques.

Materials Needed:

  • Bubble wrap
  • Washable blue paint
  • Construction paper (various colors)
  • Scissors
  • Glue

How to Set Up:

Setting up this activity couldn’t be easier! Here’s how:

  1. Prep Your Umbrella Shapes:
  • First, grab your colorful construction paper and cut out a large umbrella shape. Use a bowl turned upside down to trace a circle and then cut the scalloped shapes starting in the middle to create the umbrella. Use a different color to cut out the handle. You can trace these shapes and let your older child, preschooler or kindergartener cut them out themselves. Cut out the shapes if you are doing this craft with a toddler.
  • Next, cut another piece of construction paper into a similar-sized shape to temporarily cover your umbrella. It could be another umbrella or even just a simple oval or half-circle. Its should be long enough to cover the entire space under the umbrella and end at the bottom of the page.
  1. Prepare Your Bubble Wrap:
  • Lay out a piece of bubble wrap, bubbles facing up, and paint it generously with washable blue paint.
  1. Bubble Wrap Printing:
  • Place your umbrella shape onto a clean piece of white cardstock, and cover it with the second shape you cut out. This second shape acts as a mask to keep your umbrella clean.
  • Now, gently press the painted bubble wrap over the entire paper.
  • Carefully lift the bubble wrap straight up to reveal the beautiful, textured raindrops.
  1. Reveal Your Umbrella:
  • Remove the top mask carefully, leaving behind a clear, unpainted spot where your umbrella will fit perfectly.
  1. Finish It Up:
  • Glue your colorful umbrella onto the dry, bubble-wrap-printed paper.
  • Glue on the small handle for your umbrella. Voila! Your rainy-day masterpiece is complete.

Helpful Tips for Making Your Bubble Wrap Umbrella Craft:

  • Feel free to experiment with colors! Maybe your little artist prefers purple or teal raindrops. Let them take the lead.
  • If you’re crafting with younger kids, pre-cutting shapes can save time and help them dive straight into the painting fun.
  • Hang these cute creations around the house for some instant rainy-day cheer!

So next time rain clouds roll in, pull out some bubble wrap and get crafting. This Bubble Wrap Umbrella Craft is sure to bring sunshine into your home, no matter the weather!

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
