Spooky season or not, spiderwebs always make for a fun and creative craft! This Crayon Resist Spiderweb project is perfect for kids who love painting and learning a bit of art science along the way. The “resist” technique creates a cool effect where the wax from the crayon blocks the paint, leaving a web design that pops against the watercolors. Plus, this activity helps with strengthening and developing fine motor skills.

What You’ll Need
- Paper plate
- White crayon
- Watercolors
- Paintbrush
- White string
- Small toy spider
- Hot glue gun
How to Set Up
- Draw the spiderweb: Start by using a white crayon to draw a spiderweb on the paper plate. For younger kids you can draw it yourself but allow older kids to create their own web. You can lightly draw the web with a pencil and invite them to trace it with the white crayon as well. The crayon will resist the watercolor paint, which makes the design pop later.
- Bring out the web with watercolors: Once the spiderweb is drawn, have your child use watercolors to paint over the entire paper plate. As they brush on the colors, the spiderweb will magically appear through the resist effect. Let the paint dry completely.
- Add the spider: Cut a piece of white string, long enough to dangle the spider. Use a hot glue gun to attach one end of the string to the small toy spider and the other end to the center of the paper plate. This will make it look like the spider is hanging from the web!
- Create a hanging loop: To finish the project, use the string to create a small loop at the top of the paper plate. This will allow you to hang the spiderweb as a fun Halloween decoration.
