Getting your garden started can be a fun and educational experience for kids. Using an egg carton as a seed tray is an excellent way to recycle while teaching kids about the growth process of plants. Let’s explore how you can turn an ordinary egg carton into your very first mini garden!

Egg Carton Garden Material List

  • Egg carton (cardboard is preferable)
  • Plastic lid
  • Potting soil
  • Seeds (herbs, vegetables, or flowers)
  • Water
  • Scissors (if modifying the carton)
  • Spray bottle for watering

Detailed Step-by-Step Tutorial

Step 1: Prepare Your Egg Carton

Begin by cutting the lid off the egg carton. If your carton has a flap for closing, you can cut this off too. This part can be saved and used as a tray to sit the main section on to catch any excess water.

Step 2: Fill with Soil

Poke a few small holes in the bottom of each egg compartment for drainage. Fill each compartment nearly full with potting soil. Potting soil is recommended because it’s specially formulated to hold moisture and provide the nutrients seeds need to start growing.

Step 3: Plant Your Seeds

Read the seed packets for specific planting instructions. Generally, you will plant 1-2 seeds per compartment, depending on the size of the seeds. Cover the seeds lightly with soil, press down gently, and give them a good misting with water from your spray bottle.

Step 4: Create a Greenhouse Effect

To create a greenhouse effect, you can use the top half of a clear plastic lid or plastic wrap over the top of your seeds to help keep the moisture in. Just make sure to remove this once you see the seeds starting to sprout.

Step 5: Care and Growth

Place your egg carton in a warm area that gets plenty of sunlight. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Sprouting times can vary depending on the type of seed, but you should start seeing sprouts in a week or two.

Step 6: Transplanting

Once your seedlings have grown sturdy and the risk of frost has passed, they can be transplanted outside or into larger pots. Be careful when transplanting to avoid damaging the tender roots.

Tips for Successful Egg Carton Garden

  • Ensure that your egg cartons are clean and free from any residual egg to avoid the growth of bacteria.
  • Use a spray bottle to water your seeds gently to prevent washing away the seeds or causing mold issues with too much moisture.
  • Label your cartons if you’re planting different types of seeds, so you don’t forget what you planted where!
