This DIY Fairy Garden Craft is simple to make and a great way to get kids outdoors while working on fine motor skills and storytelling.

And the best part? You don’t need to go out and buy fancy fairy garden kits. You can DIY it with a few simple materials—some of which you might already have at home.

Why You’ll Love This Fairy Garden Craft

  • Encourages Imaginative Play – Kids will love creating tiny fairy worlds, adding their own stories, and making little fairies or animals “live” in their garden.
  • Hands-On Learning – This craft is a great mix of creativity and nature play. It introduces kids to gardening concepts while allowing them to design and decorate their magical space.
  • Completely Customizable – Want a pink and purple fairy garden? Go for it. More of a woodland vibe? Add some pinecones! There are no rules, just fun.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Wooden birdhouse (this will be your fairy house!)
  • Garden paint (for decorating your fairy house)
  • Paintbrush
  • Flower pot (or a shallow container to build your fairy garden)
  • Soil
  • Flowers (real or fake—whatever you prefer!)
  • Moss (for that soft, magical touch)
  • Rocks (for a mini fairy pathway)
  • Pink gemstones (for sparkle and fairy magic)
  • Fake butterflies (because every fairy garden needs some winged friends!)

How to Make Your DIY Fairy Garden

  1. Paint the Fairy House: Start by painting your wooden birdhouse in any colors you like! You can go pastel, bright and bold, or even keep it simple with natural tones. Add patterns like polka dots, swirls, or little flowers. Let it dry completely before adding details.
  1. Prepare the Flower Pot: Fill your flower pot or shallow container with soil. This will be the base of your fairy garden. If you’re using real flowers, make a small hole and gently plant them in the soil. If you’re using fake flowers, simply poke them into the dirt.
  1. Add Moss & Pathway Rocks: Arrange the moss around your fairy house to create a soft and cozy space for the fairies to rest. Line up small rocks or pebbles to form a little pathway leading up to the house.
  1. Decorate with Fairy Magic: Place pink gemstones around the garden to make it sparkle. Add fake butterflies by attaching them to small sticks or placing them on the house and flowers. You can even sprinkle a little glitter to give your garden an extra magical touch!
  1. Let Your Kids Play & Imagine: Once everything is set up, encourage your child to create fairy stories. They can bring in small figurines, make up names for their fairies, or add more natural elements like twigs and leaves.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
