This Heart Tree Craft is all about creating something beautiful, colorful, and full of meaning! With just construction paper, glue, and scissors, kids can design their own tree of love, decorated with bright, cheerful hearts instead of leaves.

This is the perfect Valentine’s Day craft for kids of all ages, but honestly, it works anytime you want to spread love and kindness. Whether you’re making it at home, in the classroom, or as part of a themed kindness project, this craft is simple, fun, and a great way to work on fine motor skills.

Why You’ll Love This Craft

  • Great for all ages – Toddlers can stick on hearts, while older kids can design cool patterns.
  • Perfect for Valentine’s Day – A creative way to celebrate love, friendship, and kindness!
  • Great scissor practice – Cutting out hearts helps kids develop fine motor skills.
  • Beautiful keepsake – These trees make great gifts, decorations, or even classroom displays.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Construction paper (various colors for hearts + brown for the tree trunk)
  • Scissors (for cutting hearts and tree shape)
  • Glue stick
  • Heart lever punch (optional but fun!)

How to Make a Heart Tree Craft

  1. Use brown construction paper to cut out a tree trunk with a several branches. Keep it simple for little kids or add lots of branches for older ones. Kids can freehand the trunk or use a template if needed. Find my tree templates here.
  1. Cut out hearts from red, pink, purple, and any other fun colors. We used every color of the rainbow If you have a heart lever punch, this part is even easier (and extra fun for kids)!
  1. Have kids glue the hearts onto the branches, just like leaves on a tree. Let them overlap, mix colors, and create fun patterns to make their trees unique!
  1. Optional: Use markers to draw a little heart-shaped hole in the tree trunk. Write a kind message or name on the tree to make it personal.
  1. Hang them up on the fridge, wall, or in the classroom for a bright and cheerful Valentine’s display!

Fun Variations to Try

  • Watercolor Background – Paint a soft sky or sunset behind the tree for an extra dreamy effect.
  • Heart Tree Cards – Fold paper in half and turn this into a homemade Valentine’s Day card.
  • Seasonal Trees – Try this craft in fall with orange & yellow hearts, or spring with pastel hearts!

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
