Eggshell Caterpillar Garden for Spring or Earth Day

Not only is this activity a great way to spark creativity in children, but it also teaches them about sustainability and the importance of repurposing materials. By using egg shells that would otherwise be discarded, we can help reduce waste and promote a more sustainable lifestyle.

We’ll provide step-by-step instructions on how to create an eggshell caterpillar using materials such as egg shells, paint, pipe cleaners, and googly eyes. This project is perfect for kids of all ages and can be completed in just a few easy steps. So, let’s get started and bring some springtime fun into your home with this adorable egg shell caterpillar craft!

Caution: Have an adult help you wash out the egg shells.

  • 5 Eggshells cleaned and dried
  • 1 Egg carton, cut into 5 sections to hold the egg shells
  • 2 Googley eyes
  • 1 Pipe cleaner
  • Black sharpie
  • Small spoon
  • Potting soil
  • Seeds (ex. Wheatgrass, grass seed, chives, lavender)
  • Spray bottle with water

How to Make An Eggshell Caterpillar Garden

  1. Gently crack 5 eggs and remove the top of the shell (ask an adult for help!). Save the eggs to cook for later. Wash and place the shells upside down to dry.
  2. Place each shell into a section of the egg carton.
  1. Draw caterpillar feet on each egg carton section using the black sharpie.
  2. On one eggshell, glue on 2 googley eyes and draw on a smile using the black sharpie.
  1. Gently spoon out some potting soil into each egg shell, then plant your seeds, as directed.
  2. Fold a pipe cleaner in half, curl the ends and stick it in the soil of the caterpillar head.
  3. Spray the soil with water and place on a sunny windowsill.
  4. Water daily and watch the caterpillar “hair” grow. You should see sprouts in about a week. Be careful not to over water!

Crafty Challenge: Try experimenting with different growing conditions. Place one eggshell in a dark area, another in a full sun, another in partial sun and place one outside. No eggshells, you can also use the egg carton. It’s biodegradable.

STEAM Stamp: Recording what you see is a part of being a scientist. Draw the changes you see over a few days.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 airs in the summer of 2023! We were also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
