This is a fun and easy number learning activity involving fingerprinting.

It’s a great way to get your toddler or preschooler more familiar with writing numbers.

Here’s what you’ll need to do Fingerprint Numbers with your child:
Easy Set Up for Fingerprint Numbers
Get out your washable finger paints.

Place them in a paint palette or old egg carton.

On kraft paper write out different numbers you want your child to work on.

It’s better to just do a few numbers for toddlers and preschoolers. If they are interested then you can add more.

Next, show your toddler or preschooler how to dip their finger into the paint and use it to make fingerprint along each number.

Tell them they can use any colour.

My four year old likes to fingerprint the numbers in one colour and then switch colours for the next number.

Fine Motor Workout
This is a great fine motor skills activity that will also help your toddler and preschooler recognize how to form numbers. This is also a great pre-writing activity.

A Word About Pre-writing
This ended up being a very fun activity and has the potential to be a great pre-writing exercise. But you as the parent need to remember a few things.

Have your little one start printing the numbers where they would start writing them if using a pencil. Also show them the direction in which each number is made.

All that being said toddlers and preschoolers can sometimes be very adamant about where and how they want to do finger paint!

You have to pick your battles! Even if you tell them how to write the numbers properly and they decide to do the complete opposite that’s OK!

They are learning and know that the next time you do thus activity they will remember the lessons learned today.

Clean Up
The clean up for this activity is easy. Just have a box of wipes or wet paper towel handy to wipe the paint off little fingers!
