  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Spray bottles (filled with vinegar, blue food coloring, and a small amount of dish soap)
  • Tray or sensory bin
  • Jungle animal figurines
  • Artificial leaves or plants

How to Make A Fizzy Jungle

Setting up the Fizzy Jungle:
Begin by spreading a layer of baking soda evenly on a tray or in a sensory bin. Arrange the jungle animal figurines and artificial leaves or plants on top of the baking soda, creating a vibrant jungle scene.

Introducing the Spray Bottles:
Fill the spray bottles with vinegar, adding a few drops of blue food coloring to one of the bottles for an extra visual effect. In another bottle, add a small amount of dish soap. These additions will enhance the fizzing reaction and create a bubbly eruption when sprayed onto the baking soda.

Unleashing the Fizz:
Invite your children to become scientists as they hold the spray bottles and observe the magical reactions that occur when vinegar comes into contact with baking soda. Encourage them to spray the vinegar onto the baking soda, focusing on different areas of the tray to explore the varied reactions.

Observing and Experimenting:
As the vinegar interacts with the baking soda, a chemical reaction called an acid-base reaction takes place. Carbon dioxide gas is produced, leading to the fizzy eruption. Encourage your children to observe and describe what they see, listen to the sound of the fizz, and touch the texture of the bubbly mixture. They can experiment with different spray techniques, distances, and angles to see how it affects the reaction.

The Science Behind Baking Soda and Vinegar Experiments

Acid-Base Reaction:
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a base, while vinegar (acetic acid) is an acid. When they combine, the acid and base react, producing carbon dioxide gas, water, and a salt. The gas bubbles created during this reaction are what cause the fizzy eruption. This simple but captivating reaction demonstrates the fundamentals of chemistry and allows children to witness firsthand how different substances can interact and transform.

The Fizzy Jungle activity offers a mesmerizing and educational experience for children. By combining baking soda, vinegar, and a touch of imagination, kids can engage in a hands-on exploration of the chemistry behind the reaction. They will witness bubbling eruptions, observe color changes, and discover the concepts of acids, bases, pH,

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 airs in the summer of 2023! We were also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
