Teaching preschoolers the alphabet doesn’t have to be boring! This Igloo Alphabet Activity is a fun, hands-on way to engage young learners while introducing or reinforcing their letter recognition skills. It’s perfect for winter-themed lessons and combines creativity, fine motor skills, and literacy practice into one exciting activity. With just a few materials, you can create an educational and memorable experience for your preschooler.
Let’s walk through how to set up this playful activity and why it’s an excellent way to bring winter fun into learning.
Why You’ll Love This Igloo Alphabet Activity
This activity combines art, sensory play, and early literacy skills, making it both entertaining and educational. Preschoolers will love stamping and painting their way to create an igloo while practicing letter recognition. Teachers and parents will appreciate how easy it is to set up, and it’s adaptable for different learning levels. Whether you’re teaching letter identification, letter sounds, or even simple words, this activity can be tailored to your child’s needs.

Materials You’ll Need:
- Butcher paper
- White Posca marker or crayon
- LEGO Duplo blocks
- White or light blue paint
- Paper plate for paint
Step-by-Step Instructions for the Igloo Alphabet Activity
- Prepare Your Workspace
Roll out a large sheet of butcher paper and tape it to the floor or table to create a smooth, flat surface for the activity. Use the white Posca marker or crayon to outline the shape of an igloo. Write out all the letters your child is familiar with or those that you want they to practice. Include both upper and lower case. Along with those latter include lots of lower and upper case “Ii”.

- Add Letters to the Igloo
Write lots letter inside of the igloo using the Posca marker. Include uppercase, lowercase, or a mix of both depending on your child’s skill level. For added practice, include letters your child is currently learning or struggling with. Along with those letter include lots of lower and upper case “Ii”. Before starting the activity invite your child to read and sound out the word igloo.

- Set Up the Paint
Pour white and light blue paint onto a paper plate to mimic the frosty colors of an igloo. Provide LEGO Duplo blocks for stamping—these will represent the icy blocks of the igloo.

- Let the Painting Begin
Show your preschooler how to dip a LEGO Duplo block into the paint and stamp it onto the butcher paper over only the letter ‘Ii’s”. Encourage them to say the letter or its sound as they paint each letter Ii. This reinforces letter recognition and phonemic awareness.

- Finish and Display
Allow the igloo to dry completely. Once finished, display it as a fun reminder of your child’s learning. You can even revisit it later for additional letter practice.

Tips for Success
- Focus on Learning Goals: Tailor the activity to your child’s needs—practice letters, sounds, or even simple words.
- Keep It Playful: Encourage creativity by letting your child mix paint colors or add decorations to the igloo.
- Reinforce Learning: As your child stamps each letter, ask questions like “What sound does this letter make?” or “Can you think of a word that starts with this letter?”

Why This Activity Works for Preschoolers
The Igloo Alphabet Activity works because it combines tactile play with learning, which helps preschoolers retain information better. Stamping with LEGO Duplo blocks is not only fun but also great for developing fine motor skills. Plus, the winter theme keeps the activity fresh and exciting for the season.
Gather your materials, roll out the paper, and let the learning (and stamping) begin!
