LEGO Zip Line: The Ultimate STEM Adventure for Kids!

Okay, let’s talk about one of our favorite LEGO challenges ever—the LEGO zip line. It’s creative, exciting, and full of those “WOW!” moments that kids can’t get enough of. My kids could build LEGO vehicles and towers all day, but once we introduced this zip line project? Total game-changer.

If your crew loves building, tinkering, and testing (and let’s be real, most kids do), this easy LEGO zip line is a must-try. It combines imaginative play with problem-solving and just enough chaos to keep it exciting. Plus, it’s a great excuse to tie some string across your living room or backyard (or like we did from the 3rd floor balcony to the backyard?!?)—hello, instant STEM lab!

Why You’ll Love This LEGO Zip line

  • It’s active: Kids get up and moving while testing their creations.
  • It’s hands-on: Combines STEM learning with LEGO building skills.
  • It’s flexible: Perfect for indoors or outdoors.
  • It’s repeatable: Your kids will want to tweak their design and test again (and again).

This is one of those activities that sparks both giggles and genius-level engineering—all with a pile of bricks and some string.

Materials You’ll Need

  • LEGO or LEGO DUPLO
  • String or yarn (at least 6-10 feet)
  • Scissors
  • A safe high spot to tie your string (like stair railings, door handles, chairs, or trees)

How to Set Up a LEGO Zip Line

Step 1: Find Your Zip Line Route

Pick two sturdy points that are at different heights. You’ll want a nice downward slope for gravity to do its job—think stair rail to a chair, or a tree branch to a fence. Make sure it’s a safe area where kids can move freely.

Tie your string tightly between the two points. You don’t want too much slack—keep it taut for a smooth ride.

Step 2: Build Your LEGO Zip Line Rider

Here’s where the fun really begins! Use LEGO bricks or DUPLO to create a vehicle, or gondola. You want your zipline gondola to:

  • Be lightweight
  • Have a hook or opening that can slide easily along the string
  • Be balanced enough not to flip

We usually used a few bricks and create a simple gondola structure and then created a handle structure on top with an opening. Dont forget to add a LEGO minifigure or toy animal for extra fun!

Step 3: Attach to the Zip Line

Gently hook or place the LEGO creation onto the string. For most of our structures we have to remove the hook and then reattach it while it was on the string. We did this one at time since once at the opt of the zipline the gondola didn’t stay without holding it.

Test it by letting go at the higher end—if it zips down, awesome! If it stops or flips, tweak the balance or weight or angle of the zipline and try again.

Let the Experiments Begin

Once your first zipline run is a success, the real fun begins. Try:

  • Changing the height or length of your zipline
  • Racing two riders on parallel lines
  • Testing what makes it go faster or slower
  • Creating challenges like “carry the LEGO bear across the canyon!”

This is where STEM learning meets play-based problem-solving—kids naturally start asking, “What if I change this?” and boom, they’re learning physics and design thinking without even realizing it.

Science Behind the LEGO Zip Line

The science behind a LEGO zipline is all about gravity, friction, and force in motion—big concepts made fun and hands-on for kids! When you attach a LEGO gondola to the zip line string, gravity pulls it downward, causing it to slide along the string from the higher end to the lower end.

The smoother the string and the lighter the friction between the LEGO and the string, the faster it goes! Kids also get to experiment with balance, weight distribution, and design as they build different LEGO carriers to ride the zipline—making it a playful intro to physics and engineering principles without even realizing they’re learning.

The LEGO zipline is a low-prep, high-impact activity your kids will be talking about for days. Whether you’re indoors on a rainy afternoon or outside soaking up the sun, this is the kind of project that turns an ordinary day into a full-on adventure.

So grab that string, set up your “mountain base,” and let those mini engineers go wild designing their very own zip line ride. Just be prepared—they’re probably going to want to build an entire LEGO amusement park next.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
