Magnetic Tile Colour Sort

I just love our magnetic tiles. They are amazing open ended toys that all three of my kids love!

But did you know that Magnetic Tiles are just for building! I know right!? They can also be a great learning tool especially when it comes to colours and shapes! This activity is a fantastic colour sorting activity perfect for toddlers and preschoolers who love their magnetic tiles!

Here’s how to get started!

The set up for this activity is crazy easy, which is just how I like it!

Gather your collection of magnetic tiles and pull out all the square magnetic tiles and put them together.

Extend the Activity

If you want you can have your preschooler do this part of the activity. Sit the box of magnetic tiles in front of them and ask them to pull out all the squares and triangles and stack them together.

Next, put one of each coloured square tile in a line. If you don’t have all the colours of the rainbow don’t worry just use the colours that you have.

(EXTEND THE ACTIVITY: you have the option of letting your preschooler do this part of the activity as well!)

Then ask your toddler or preschooler to sort the rest of the square tiles by attaching them to the bottom of the corresponding colour.

Name that Colour

Toddlers and preschoolers learn by repetition so as they are sorting make sure to name the colours even if they can’t.

Other Shapes

After they have finished the squares you can have them sort different shapes. Remember toddlers may not have the stamina to sort that many objects so always check their interest before introducing new items to sort. But if they are loving it then keep going with other shapes!

Fine Motor Skills

This activity is also great for developing and strengthening fine motor muscles. Separating the magnetic tiles and laying them down straight is also a way to develop hand eye coordination.

Lots of Fun

This was a very fun colour sorting activity and the best part is at the end it can turn into a free play building session giving you even more time to drink that much needed coffee! Enjoy!
