INSIDE: Pom Pom Caterpillar Counting for Valentine’s Day is a great early math activity for preschoolers (and toddlers). It is also a fun painting activity with Pom Poms and an easy way to practice counting and fine motor skills with your little one!

Heart Caterpillar

Create adorable little heart caterpillars with this fun and easy early math activity for preschoolers and toddlers. It’s a great counting idea where kids have to count the sections of the heart caterpillars and create them using paint and pom poms.

Pom Pom Caterpillar Counting for Valentine’s Day

There are two ways of doing this activity depending on the age of your child and their interest. I have twin 3 year olds. One of my twins would love helping to prep this counting activity while the other one would not. If you think your child would enjoy “helping” you set up this activity (and btw that is also how you can approach this part of the activity), you can cut hearts out of construction paper and invite your little one to glue them down in a line on a piece of white paper similar to what is pictured below. Next, invite them to draw a little caterpillar face on each caterpillar.

If your child isn’t the type to want to help set up this type of activity, you can take a few markers and draw the hearts and caterpillar faces .

Write the numbers from 1 to 8 on the other side of the numbers. Grab some clothes pins and attach the colourful Pom Poms. Pour out some pink, purple and red paint on a paper plate.

Invite your little one to stamp with the Pom Poms the correct number of body sections for the heart caterpillar! Super easy and fun.

Alternative Way of Doing Heart Caterpillar counting

Does your child love to finger-paint? One of my kids doesn’t like getting their fingers messy with paint during so always have a mess free alternative. But if you child loves to paint with their fingers, they can create the heart caterpillar using their fingerprints!

Age Suitability for Pom Pom Caterpillar Counting for Valentine’s Day
