There’s something about St. Patrick’s Day crafts that just makes them extra fun. Maybe it’s all the green, maybe it’s the lucky shamrocks, or maybe it’s just an excuse to break out the paint and get a little messy. Either way, this Pom Pom Painted Shamrock Craft is one that toddlers and preschoolers will absolutely love.
This craft is all about process art—instead of using a traditional paintbrush, kids will paint using pom poms! It’s a simple and low-prep way to get little hands busy while working on fine motor skills and creativity. Plus, you probably already have everything you need to get started.

Supplies Required
- Shamrock template (available below)
- Pom Poms
- Clothespins
- Various shades of green paint
- White cardstock
How to Create
- Print out the shamrock template below. Cut it out and lay it on the middle of your white cardstock. you can use a small piece of masking tape rolled up to secure the shamrock outline to the page. This will make it easier for your child to paint without it moving.
- Attached your pom poms to clothespins. For each different color or shade of green that you have you should have a Pom Pom. This will prevent colors from mixing too much at first.
- Pour out paint on to a paper plate. Dip the pom poms into the paint and start to paint around the shamrock template.
- Continue until the entire paint is covered in green dots. Once dry careful remove the shamrock template to reveal the shamrock negative space below!
Pom Pom Painting Tips for a Fun Experience
- Use different sizes of pom poms to create cool textured effects. A smaller pom pom will make tiny dots, while a larger one creates a bold stamped look.
- Try different shades of green! Let kids explore light green, dark green, and even a little gold for fun variations.
- Attach pom poms to clothespins for an easy-to-grip painting tool, especially for little hands still developing fine motor control.
