If you’re looking for a simple, engaging, and low-prep learning activity for your toddler, this popsicle stick color match activity is a total win. It combines color recognition, and fine motor skills into one playful, hands-on experience—and it looks as fun as it feels.

This is the kind of activity that keeps toddlers curious, moving, and learning without feeling like “learning.”

Materials

  • Large sheet of paper (butcher paper works great)
  • Colored markers
  • Colored popsicle sticks (or paint your own)
  • Painter’s tape (to secure the paper)

How to Set Up

  1. Start by taping a large sheet of paper to the table or floor using painter’s tape. This keeps everything in place and creates a defined workspace for your toddler.
  2. Next, use colored markers to draw long oval or rounded rectangle shapes across the paper. Make each outline a different color, matching the colors of your popsicle sticks. Spread them out in different directions to make the setup visually interesting and inviting.
  3. Then, place the colored popsicle sticks around the paper (or in a small bin nearby).
  4. That’s it—your activity is ready.

How to Play

Invite your toddler to match each popsicle stick to the correct colored outline on the paper. Show them how to place a stick inside the matching shape, lining it up as best they can.

Toddlers can:

  • Match by color
  • Practice placing sticks inside the outlines
  • Explore turning and adjusting the sticks to fit

There’s no “perfect” way to do this. The goal is exploration, not perfection.

Why This Activity Works

This simple setup is packed with learning.

Toddlers are building:

  • Fine motor skills by picking up and placing the sticks
  • Hand-eye coordination as they line up shapes
  • Color recognition through matching
  • Spatial awareness as they rotate and adjust pieces

And because it’s open-ended, kids can engage with it at their own level.

Easy Ways to Change It Up

Once your toddler gets the hang of it, you can easily adjust the activity to keep it fresh. Or you have a preschooler and want to do this activity with them. Try these methods to level up this simple and fun activity.

Try:

  • Add numbers, letters of shapes on either side of the outline on the paper and on the popsicle stick. Your toddler or preschooler will need to match not only the color but also the number, letter or shape.
  • Add different sizes popsicle sticks. The dollar store has jumbo popsicles sticks and smaller regular sized ones. Mix up both sizes to give this activity more dimension for older toddlers and preschoolers.
  • Turning it into a “find and match” game by placing sticks farther away
  • Introducing simple counting (how many blue sticks did you match? how many orange?)

You can also swap popsicle sticks for other objects like straws or craft sticks for variety.

Tips for Success

  • Keep the setup simple—too many pieces can feel overwhelming
  • Sit nearby and model the first few matches
  • Let your toddler explore freely without correcting too much
  • Celebrate effort, not accuracy

Remember, this is about learning through PLAY!

FAQs

  1. What age is this activity best for?
This is perfect for toddlers around 18 months to 3 years old. Younger toddlers may need more support, while older toddlers can do it independently.
  2. Do I need colored popsicle sticks?
Nope! You can paint regular popsicle sticks or even use colored markers to create your own.
  3. What if my toddler doesn’t match correctly?
That’s totally okay. Matching takes time to develop. Focus on the process, not getting it “right.”
  4. Can I reuse this activity?
Yes! Just swap out the paper or draw new shapes for a fresh setup.
  5. Is this messy?
Not at all—this is a great low-mess activity, especially for indoor play.

This popsicle stick shape matching activity is one of those simple setups that delivers big. It’s easy to make, fun for toddlers, and supports early learning in a way that feels natural and playful.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
