I love an easy craft that also works on key skills like fine motor capabilities.
Here is fun and easy to set up classic winter craft activity with a fine motor skill twist.
Making popsicle snowflakes and decorating them with pipe cleaners!
Here’s what you’ll need to get started.
Supplies
-
- Craft or Popsicle Sticks
- White, silver, shimmery white Pipe Cleaners
- Glue
- Craft or Popsicle Sticks
Directions
Take a pipe cleaner and wrap it around a popsicle stick.
For my three year old, I started by wrapping the pipe cleaner around the stick once in order to secure it. Then I handed her the pipe cleaner while I held the stick. This made it easier for her to wrap it around.
For each stick you and your toddler or preschooler can decide if you want to do different colour pipe cleaners or all the same colour.
After she started to get the hang of wrapping the pipe cleaner around I let her hold the popsicle stick and try to wrap it around it herself.
Don’t under estimate how simple this action is. For a toddler or preschooler wrapping around can be quite challenging. That is what makes this craft such a great activity to strengthen fine motor skills and hand eye coordination.
Once you have wrapped 4 popsicle sticks with pipe cleaners, shift the pipe cleaners around so that the center of the popsicle sticks is clear (see photo below for reference). This is where you will glue the sticks together.
Add lots of glue to the center of the sticks and stack one on top of the other forming a cross. Push down and hold for about 30 seconds.
Repeat with the other two sticks.
Leave the snowflake on a table to dry for at least 1 hour before moving it.
