This is a super fun and easy winter activity that had my three year old entertained for almost two hours!? After the 4th doing it I had to tell her that this would be the last time!

ARTSNOW8

The only thing you need that can’t be controlled is snow. So save this one for the next time it snows and your kids will have a blast!

Here’s what you’ll need to get started.

Supplies for Snow Painting

How to Set Up Snow Painting for Your Toddler

Coloured Water

The first thing to do is to set up the coloured water for painting. We painted with six colours (pink, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple).

ARTSNOW

Add a drop or two of the food colouring for each colour into separate bowls. Then add  water and mix in the food colouring.

ARTSNOW0

To make green mix yellow and blue and to make purple mix pink or red with blue.

ARTSNOW1

Lay down a few towels under the everything. If you don’t want your kitchen towels to get stained with food colouring you can lay down a few layers of craft paper on your table or a plastic sheet to help protect it.

Gather all the tools – turkey baster, syringe, and eye dropper. Don’t worry if you don’t have all of these items just grab what you have. Your little one will still have fun with just a turkey baster.

Snow Canvas

ARTSNOW2

Time to get the snow canvas! Grab your baking sheet and head outside (don’t forget to put on a hat and boots!). The key to having the snow last inside without melting into a puddle of water in 5 minutes is to pack lots of snow on the baking sheet.

ARTSNOW3

Pack the snow down on the baking sheet. Bring it inside and lay it beside the bowls of coloured water and all your fine motor tools.

ARTSNOW9

Snow Art

ARTSNOW10

Have your little one use the tools to pick up the coloured light and draw on the snow.

ARTSNOW12

At first my three year old picked up the liquid and dumped it in one spot. By the fourth round of fresh snow canvas she was using the tools to make circles and swirls.

ARTSNOW15

To say that this was a hit was an understatement. And the bonus is that they are strengthening those all important fine motor skills that will help write and do up buttons as they mature.

ARTSNOW18

My three year old loved this activity so much it will definitely become a staple every snow day from here on out!

ARTSNOW16

Clean Up

Best thing to do is to take a picture of your lovely snow canvas then dump it before it melts too much. I dumped the first few outside in the snow and grabbed some more fresh snow for another canvas.

But if it got too watery I just dumped the canvas in the sink.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
